On Friday, May 19, 2006, Broadway actor/Director-Producer JAMES STOVALL will stage two riveting new works by contemporary African American writers:

“WEEKEND PASS” – a one act play written by Allen C. Dawson

With the backdrop of World War II – two historic incidences in particular – this play explores the unique experiences of African American (Negro) soldiers who fought in that war. Set in segregated army barracks in the American South, these soldiers discover the heavy price of “assimilation into America”.

“DELIVER THE DANCE” is a poignant new musical in development with a book written by Que English, music and lyrics by Melanie McLeggan and Que English. There will be a thirty minute presentation of narrated excerpts from the show.

During the summer of the year 2000, the life of a young aspiring dancer – Rachel – is turned upside down. We join her as she is catapulted onto a journey of change and discovery. On and off stage, this young black girl is commanded to “deliver the dance!”

The evening is co-sponsored by the Museum of the City of New York and Community Works NYC
